The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the commencement of a nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise across all states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The exercise is scheduled to begin on 18th August 2025 as part of preparations for the 2027 General Elections.
This announcement was made by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Benue State, Professor Samuel Egwu, on Monday, 14th July 2025.
Professor Egwu explained that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides for continuous voter registration to accommodate individuals who have newly attained the age of 18 since the last general elections. He noted that, just as with the 2019–2023 electoral cycle, the upcoming registration will begin with an online pre-registration phase via the INEC website: https://cvr.inecnigeria.org. This online platform is intended to ease the registration process for prospective voters.

The in-person registration will commence on 25th August 2025 at all INEC area offices and other designated centres nationwide. The exercise will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Mondays to Fridays, and will run for a period of three months to allow adequate time for data processing and integration.
The CVR exercise will cover the following categories: Individuals who have recently turned 18 years of age, Persons who missed the last registration due to absence (travel, imprisonment, etc.), Individuals seeking card replacements due to loss, theft, or damage, Voters needing corrections or updates on their existing cards and those requesting intra- or inter-state transfers or moving from one ward/polling unit to another.
Prof. Egwu emphasized that INEC does not charge for any of the services provided during the CVR process. He urged the public to report any INEC official who demands payment or gratification.
The REC further stated that registration would initially take place at INEC area offices in all local government areas, with additional registration points to be announced in due course. He also assured that Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) would be included in the voter education, registration, and voting processes.
In a final note, the commission appealed to the public to submit names of deceased relatives to aid in the cleanup of the voter register. Prof. Egwu encouraged all stakeholders to take the CVR process seriously, stressing that being registered is the first step to exercising one’s franchise in the forthcoming elections.
